Tony La Russa won’t return to manage the Chicago White Sox this season, the team announced on Saturday.
Doctors advised the 77-year-old manager to not manage again this season, the White Sox announced. La Russa is combating a heart ailment, a condition that’s taken him out of the dugout since August.
“Health is nothing to mess with,” La Russa said earlier this month. “I got checked in Chicago and the reason that I flew to Arizona is that’s been the place since the ’90s I’ve had my physicals. They addressed it, they fixed it and now it’s just a question of regaining strength.”
La Russa, a Hall of Fame manager who came out of retirement last season, underwent extensive medical testing before being ruled out for Chicago’s 2022 campaign. The three-time World Series champion previously managed the White Sox during the ‘80s.
The White Sox announced Miguel Cairo will take over the reins for the team after assuming managerial duties since La Russa’s absence.
