Ex-Alabama player Darius Miles denied bond in fatal shooting of Jamea Harris

Ex-Alabama basketball player Darius Miles was denied bond on Wednesday as he faces a capital murder charge stemming from a fatal January shooting near campus.

At Wednesday’s hearing, Tuscaloosa County Circuit Judge Daniel Pruet said the bail issue could be revisited later.

Defense attorney Mary Tuner said Miles’ mother and father — a police officer and a military veteran — moved to Alabama to be close to their son and to help ensure he would follow any rule placed on him if he was granted bond.

“This is a man entitled to a bond,’’ Turner said. “He would not be the only (suspect) who has ever gotten a bond on this charge.”

Miles’ former Crimson Tide teammates Jahvon Quinerly, Jaden Quinerly and Noah Gurley were among those that attended Wednesday’s hearing, according to al.com.

Miles and Michael Lynn Davis were charged with capital murder in the death of 23-year-old Jamea Harris. Miles, a former Crimson Tide reserve, had pleaded not guilty.

Davis has applied for youthful offender status.

According to court documents, Davis is accused of firing the bullet that killed Harris as she sat in the passenger seat of a vehicle on the Strip, an Tuscaloosa area filled with bars and restaurants near campus, on Jan. 15.

According to investigators’ statements in court documents, Miles admitted to providing the gun used to shoot Harris, with defense attorneys claiming Miles and Davis were reacting in defense to a male in Harris’ group.

“Jamea was a mother, daughter, girlfriend, a special lady whose future was wiped out. She was a mother of a little boy who probably loves basketball, a young boy whose mother will never watch him play basketball,” prosecutor Paula Whitley said in her argument against Miles’ bond.

Miles was kicked off the team after his arrest.

According to law enforcement testimony, freshman star Brandon Miller, a projected top-5 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, allegedly transported the gun used to shoot Harris, though he has not been charged and is a cooperating witness.
