George Springer back on injured list as tough Blue Jays start continues

George Springer’s frustrating start with the Toronto Blue Jays took another downward turn Wednesday, when the $150 million free-agent signing was placed on the injured list again with a recurrence of the right-quad strain.

The former Astros centerfielder had been out of the Jays’ lineup since leaving Sunday’s win over the Braves, just his fourth game back – all as the team’s designated hitter – since missing most of April with the injury.

“The main reason we did it is because we didn’t see him improving fast enough, so we decided to have some imaging done to determine the next steps on him,” Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo said.

The 31-year-old Springer, who chose the Blue Jays over an offer from the Mets in the offseason, had belted his first two home runs for Toronto on Saturday against the Braves. He initially was removed from Sunday’s game with what the Jays had termed “fatigue” in his quad.

“I wouldn’t call it severe,” Montoyo said. “He wasn’t going to be out six weeks or four weeks, so I wouldn’t call it severe, that’s for sure. That’s why he came back as soon as he did, because it was never severe.

“When it happened, he never really limped off the field, he just stopped running and went inside because he felt the quad.”
