Jets offensive line beginning to protect Zach Wilson better

Remember all the hand-wringing over the Jets’ offensive line early in the season?

The Jets allowed 15 sacks for losses of 118 yards in their first three games — all losses.

In the past two, a win over the Titans and Sunday’s loss to the Falcons in London, the Jets have yielded just three for 34 yards in losses — one for 8 yards against Tennessee and two for 26 yards on Sunday.

“It’s a pretty good feeling when you can look at the film and see some pretty good protection and you don’t have to help Zach [Wilson] off the ground very much,’’ Jets center Connor McGovern said Tuesday. “We had two [sacks] this past week and for us that’s two too many.

“We’re really starting to communicate well, starting to flow together well, starting to work as a unit, really jell as a unit. We all believe we have a really good unit — all five, six, seven, eight guys that dress on game day strive to be the best unit in football.’’

Wilson’s theory on why his short passes have been inaccurate has been “overthinking.’’

“I would just say, to an extent, [I’m] aiming the throw rather than just throwing it, like I’ve always done my whole life — just reacting to what a defense is giving me and just throwing it, rather than putting too much thought into it,’’ he said.

Wilson said he’s heading home to visit his family for the four-day bye-week break the players have off.

“I think it will be good to get away from football for a little bit,” he said. “I haven’t seen them in a while. I’m excited. I’m going to go work with my quarterback coach John Beck that I train with. He’s obviously super close with our staff as well, so I’m excited to go and just work on some of the things I feel like I can clean up.

“I’m going to go watch the first five games of this season, see what things I really want to put an emphasis on and, how can I just clear my mind and spend a little time with the family and then be ready to come back and get after it this next week.’’

Jets head coach Robert Saleh said he wasn’t bothered by LT Mekhi Becton, who was out with an injury and not on the London trip, tweeting during the first half of the loss to Atlanta: “UNLEASH MIMS !!!!’’

“Mekhi’s heart is always in the right place, and he just wants to see his teammates all do well,’’ Saleh said. “When you’re a young man on social media, when you tweet, you don’t understand the ramifications of what other people might look at it. He’s got a great relationship with [Denzel] Mims, as we all do. I don’t think it’s a malicious tweet towards his teammate, although people can look at it that way.’’

Saleh defended having defensive linemen — John Franklin-Myers and Bryce Huff — covering Falcons tight ends on two TDs in the game Sunday.

“The goal-line defensive call was selling out for the run,’’ Saleh said of Franklin-Myers trying to cover Kyle Pitts on a TD. “First down, sell out for the run. They got us, good for them. The second one, those zone pressures have been working for us all season. When it works, you’re a genius, when it doesn’t, you’re an idiot.’’

Saleh said he’s “hopeful’’ the Jets get safety Marcus Maye and linebacker Jarrad Davis back from injuries in time to play the Patriots on Oct. 24.

“We’ve got to go through the bye weekend and next week to see where they’re at,’’ he said. “I’m not guaranteeing anything, but we’ll have a good idea where they’re at starting next week.’’

Davis has been replaced by Quincy Williams, who’s played very well in the past few weeks. But Saleh made it clear when Davis is healthy enough to play, “he’s going to get full game reps.’’

The Jets will return to practice Monday.
