A 16-year-old teen in New Jersey has been taken into custody for shooting a 1-year-old during a dispute with the child's mother. The woman was also arrested for pointing a gun at the teen during the dispute.
Police arrived at the scene in Newark on April 12 after receiving reports of gunshots being fired. They soon received information that a toddler has been admitted to a local hospital with a gunshot wound. The child underwent emergency surgery and was reported to be in a stable condition, CBS Local reported.
Meanwhile, an investigation revealed that the child's mother, identified as Tytaneisha Wilder, got into a dispute with a few individuals during which she took out a handgun and pointed it at the group, NBC New York reported.
The unidentified teen, who was part of the group, then shot into her car where the victim was seated along with a man and two other teenagers. While some reports said that the toddler was shot in the hip, others said she was shot in the head.
Following the investigation, the child’s mother and the teen were taken into custody Saturday.
"This shooting was the result of a senseless dispute between the child’s mother and a group of individuals," Newark Public Safety Director Brian O'Hara said Saturday, New Jersey.com reported.
"We are confident that these arrests will close out this incident, and that there is no threat to the community. I would like to commend the Newark Police Major Crimes detectives for their diligence and perseverance by not resting until those responsible were brought to justice," he added.
While Wilder has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, aggravated assault, and unlawful possession of a weapon, the teen faces charges of aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon.
Both of them remained in jail as of Sunday and information regarding their bail plea was not known.
Last week, a 19-year-old teen was arrested and charged with murder for fatally stabbing a woman and her 8-year-old during a burglary at their California home.
