Super Bowl 2021: Opening odds, line for Buccaneers-Chiefs

Sportsbooks began releasing the first odds for Super Bowl 2021 with the Kansas City Chiefs set to meet the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Tampa on Feb. 7.

DraftKings online sportsbook and Stations Casino in Las Vegas were among the early posters, both making the Chiefs 3.5-point favorites with an Over/Under of 57.5. BetMGM also is in at those same numbers, with a moneyline of Chiefs -175 (risk $175 to profit $100 or anything in that proportion) and the Buccaneers +145 (risk $100 to profit $145 or anything in that proportion).

“The Super Bowl matchup of Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady has the potential to be a record Super Bowl handle,” Chuck Esposito, sportsbook director at Stations, told VSiN. “It’s [also an] awesome matchup for props.”

The defending-champion Chiefs will be playing in their fourth Super Bowl. They are 2-1 both straight up and against the spread in their previous trips.

The Buccaneers won and covered in their lone appearance.

Tom Brady will be playing in his 10th Super Bowl. He went 6-3 straight up and 4-5 against the spread as a member of the New England Patriots.

The Buccaneers and Chiefs both covered the spread in their championship victories. Tampa Bay won, 31-26, as 3-point underdogs, and Kansas City rolled, 38-24, as 3-point favorites. Both games went Over the total.

Tampa Bay will be the first team in NFL history to play a Super Bowl in its stadium. But according to John Avella, DraftKings’ sportsbook director, there wasn’t much of a home-field advantage factored into this line.

“Just a minor amount, about one point or so,” Avella told VSiN. “The Super Bowl line is more about how both teams finished today.”

This season the Buccaneers are 11-8 against the spread, while the Chiefs are just 8-10.
