Sean McVay: My Rams happiness is not a shot at Jared Goff

Sean McVay’s sudden elation is a reflection of his team as a whole and not the offseason departure of a certain quarterback.

During a media session Thursday night, the fifth-year Rams coach addressed comments he made earlier in the day that suggested he was happier to have former Lions quarterback, Matthew Stafford, under center over Jared Goff, after the two were traded for each other in January.

“I hate that I even have to say this, but I think I made a comment that was definitely taken out of context,” McVay, 35, said, according to ESPN.

“I am very excited. I am in a good mood because of the confidence that I have in this team. But by no means is that a slight to anybody, you know, like Jared, who has done a phenomenal job for the last four years here.”

Goff, the Rams’ former first-round pick in 2016, was traded to Detroit this offseason, shortly after the Rams fell to the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Divisional Round of the playoffs.

In the wake of the loss, rumors swirled that Goff, 26, and McVay needed “marriage counseling” to repair their relationship. Goff’s union with the Rams later ended in divorce.

“I hated that I even have to address that, but I did think out of respect for [Goff] and all the good things that he’s done, I am in a good mood, but that doesn’t mean it’s not because we’re working together or because of just Stafford exclusively,” McVay said. “There’s a lot of good things going on that I feel really good about and I’m confident about, so don’t twist my words when I didn’t say that.”

Meanwhile, Stafford and wife Kelly have made Los Angeles their home, recently sharing a cozy snapshot from inside SoFi Stadium.

As for Goff’s gal pal, model Christen Harper, she’s loving the quarterback in a Lions uniform.
