Trey Lance throws touchdown on first career pass for 49ers

Trey Lance didn’t get the start in his first NFL game, but the No. 3 overall pick in the draft already is on the board with a touchdown pass Sunday for the 49ers.

Jimmy Garoppolo got the start in the season opener against the Lions, but Lance was inserted by coach Kyle Shanahan in a red-zone situation and completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Trent Sherfield with 5:41 remaining in the first quarter for the first points of the season for San Francisco.

The 6-foot-4 rookie had completed 19 of 41 pass attempts for 276 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in three preseason games, but the North Dakota State product was limited in practice this week with a right index finger injury suffered Aug. 29 against the Raiders.

Garoppolo also completed his first eight passes in the first half for the Niners, who took a 21-10 lead in the second quarter on TD runs by Elijah Mitchell and JaMycal Hasty.
