Bret Baty celebrated with one of the most important people in his life after hitting the first home run of his major league career in his first big league at-bat.
The Mets third baseman appeared to give an “I love you” sign to his mom, Leslie —and she emphatically returned it — while he was rounding the bases after belting a two-run shot over the right-field wall off Braves right-hander Jake Odorizzi in the second inning Wednesday night. Baty drove in Mark Canha, who had doubled before him.
The homer must have been extra-special for Leslie, who watched her son play Little League on a team called the Mets.

Baty’s mom, Leslie, emphatically returned her son’s gesture as he rounded the bases.SNY“We always used to call him Brett the Met,” Leslie said after Baty, who grew up in Austin, Texas, was selected as the Mets’ top pick in the 2019 draft.
The blast by Baty, who is hitting in the No. 8 hole, helped give the Mets a 4-0 lead in Atlanta. The game at Truist Park was in a rain delay in the bottom of the third.
The 22-year-old Baty is considered the organization’s No. 2 overall prospect. The left-handed swinging Baty produced big numbers this season for Double-A Binghamton before a recent promotion to Triple-A Syracuse.
He owns a .315/.410/.533 slash line with 19 homers and 60 RBIs in 95 minor league games this season.
