Christian Scott was in a spot of trouble in the first inning of his major league debut, but his dad was confident he would get out of it.
The Mets’ top pitching prospect gave up a three hits and a run to the first three Tampa Bay Rays hitters he faced, but got out of the inning with no further damage.
It has turned out to be the only run the 24-year-old had given up through is 6 ²/₃-innings gem on Saturday night at Tropicana Field.

Scott’s father, Doug, who had a front-row seat to his son’s MLB debut, said he was “a little nervous” but not surprised his son escaped the first-inning jam.
“He has a knack of to be able to get out of things,” Dave told Fox Sport’s Ken Rosenthal during the game. “The first innings for the last few starts down at Triple-A he’d come back and retire a lot, so I wasn’t surprised with how he settled down.”
Dave — who was “screaming and crying with his son when Christian delivered him the news that he was headed to the big leagues — said the young right-hander always has shown composure throughout the different levels of his baseball career.
“He’s played at a high level … in high school, college and also in travel and showcase ball,” Dave said, “He’s always had that confidence and that calm demeanor in like anything he does in life, so he puts it out there.”
