A man in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh tried to rape a 10-year-old girl and threw the victim into a well, police said Sunday.
The accused, identified as Ramesh, molested the unnamed minor victim Saturday evening after catching her when she went to the toilet in Dudhlai village, Telangana Today reported, citing Ichhawar police station superintendent Mayank Awasthi.
Ramesh threw the girl into a well following the sexual assault, but the victim was able to save herself by holding on to the wires of the well, according to police.
The victim later came back home and informed her family members of the incident.
A medical examination has not confirmed if the girl was raped, but police have registered a case for rape and child abuse against Ramesh, a report by NDTV said.
Authorities have announced a Rs 10,000 ($135) reward for Ramesh, who has absconded.
An investigation into the case is currently underway.
In a similar story, two boys in Madhya Pradesh's Datia district died after they fell into a well while riding a bicycle over the weekend, according to police.
The two victims, identified as Prince Ahirwar and Lokesh Ahirwar, aged 7 and 12, respectively, were cycling near their house in Jigna when they fell into a well at around 9 a.m. Sunday, the Press Times of India reported.
Authorities were informed of the incident, and a police team reached the scene. The two victims' bodies were later brought out of the well and sent for postmortem, according to Jigna police station in-charge Ashutosh Sharma.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Nearly a dozen people died in Madhya Pradesh's Vidisha district last year after several villagers fell into a well while trying to rescue a boy who had fallen into the water hole.
Around 30 people in the city of Ganj Basoda fell into a 50-foot deep well on July 15, 2021, during the rescue attempt.
At least 11 bodies were recovered and 19 more were rescued the next day from the well, which had a water level of about 20 feet.
The incident caused a water crisis as there was only one well in the village.
