Baking soda, or soda bicarbonate as it is known in the scientific world is used in a variety of recipes, and for some very handy home hacks. When it comes to recipes, it is most often used for baking as it is a leavening ingredient, which means that it has the ability to make something rise. However, when you’re not busy baking, you should consider using baking soda as a natural cleaning agent. Here is how it can help make parts of your home shine.
Goodbye Bathroom Grime
Bathrooms are subject to a lot of grime, especially soapy build-up in bathtubs and in sinks. It can be tough to scrub away at the residue coating the sides of the tops, and the fixtures around the sink. That’s where baking soda can lend a helping hand. Baking soda can be mixed with bleach in equal proportions to create a white paste. This paste can be spread on particularly grimey spots, and left to sit for a minute or two. We suggest wearing gloves while handling the paste, as it does contain bleach. After letting the paste sit, you should be able to wipe away all of the grime without any issues. The bathtub will gleam after this cleaning treatment, as will the sink and faucet.
Stained Granite and Marble Countertops
Granite and marble are two of the most sought after materials for kitchen and bathroom countertops. Due to this, they are incredibly expensive which means you want to ensure they stay in pristine condition. However, even granite and marble can be stained by some turmeric spilled on the counter, or another similar staining substance. To eliminate these stains, make a water and baking soda mixture. It should be more of a paste, then a liquid. After it has been laid on the stain, grab some plastic wrap and place it over the entire area. Wait for 24 hours, and then gently wipe the paste away. The stain should be gone.
Crayon Wall Art
Sometimes kids like to get crafty, and not on the paper they have been provided with. If your child has decided to use the wall as a canvas, and drawn some cute little stick fingers on it, don’t worry, it can be wiped off. Baking soda will once more come to the rescue, and bring those walls back to their original condition. Grab a sponge and a box of baking soda. Then, wet the sponge and sprinkle on a bit of baking soda. A paste should form on top of the sponge, and that paste can be used to rub away the crayon on the walls. It should begin to come off, although we would not recommend vigorously scrubbing the area, instead employ a gentle touch.
