Daniel Jones taking steps toward return against Rams

Daniel Jones was at practice Wednesday, which makes him one step closer to possibly being on the field Sunday.

The Giants quarterback is still in the concussion protocol, but he wore pads, jogged, worked with trainers and was throwing on the side during the team’s practice ahead of Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium against the Rams.

There is a five-step protocol for Jones to clear, and he appears to either be on step two (aerobic exercise) or three (football-specific exercise). The next would be non-contact team training and, finally, full activity/clearance.

Joe Judge said they are preparing both Jones and backup Mike Glennon for Sunday, and the head coach “would not rule out” Jones starting even if he isn’t a full practice participant this week.

“We’ll have to look into it with how he is physically, mentally for the game,” Judge said.

Jones was crushed at the goal line by the Cowboys’ Jabril Cox and appeared woozy last Sunday. He did not return after the second-quarter hit. Awaiting this weekend will be Rams stud defensive tackle Aaron Donald, so the Giants will want to ensure Jones is OK.

Also at practice were wide receivers Sterling Shepard (hamstring), Darius Slayton (hamstring) and Kadarius Toney (ankle). Jabrill Peppers (hamstring) also practiced and looks ready for Sunday.

Saquon Barkley (ankle) and Kenny Golladay (knee) did not practice with the team.
