Chiefs’ Eric Bieniemy blows off verbal fight with Patrick Mahomes: ‘Who cares?’

Patrick Mahomes didn’t have a great Week 3 by his own standards, throwing for 262 yards, only one touchdown and an interception in the Chiefs’ 20-17 loss to the Colts.

It was what happened on the sidelines, though, that caught peoples’ attention.

The superstar QB got into an apparent shouting match between Mahomes and Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy at the end of the first half.

Mahomes seemed annoyed that the Chiefs didn’t go for more points before heading into halftime, a decision that played a role in their eventual loss.

“At that particular time, as a staff, we decided, ‘You know what? We’re getting the ball to start the second half off, so we just want to take a knee,'” Bieniemy told reporters Thursday. “So obviously, Pat, being the competitor that he is, wasn’t ready to hear that.”

Mahomes said Sunday he “wanted to go try to score” and that the altercation was blown up online. Days later, Bieniemy agreed with the QB’s assessment.

“You guys have seen me erupt,” Bienemy said. “If it had been a true eruption, I think you guys would have recognized it.”

It’s time for anyone concerned about the Mahomes-Bieniemy relationship to move on, he said.

“So the exchange that we had,” Bieniemy said. “Who cares? It really doesn’t matter. Because when it’s all said and done with, we’re going to talk a minute or two later, and talk about exactly what we need to do. So there is no personal issue. You just keep it moving forward.”

Kansas City will look to bounce back from its loss against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday night.
