A woman, who was presumed dead in a car accident, left mourners in shock when she banged on her coffin just before her burial. Though Rosa Isabel Cespedes Callaca was rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries a few hours later.
Callaca, a 36-year-old woman from Peru, met with a fatal car accident on April 26. Besides Callaca, her brother-in-law was also killed in the accident, reported ADN America. The mishap also left her nephews in critical condition.
Callaca was presumed dead, and the funeral arrangements were planned for the same day. She was placed inside a coffin, ready to be buried. However, when her relatives lifted the coffin onto their shoulders, they began to hear sounds from within.
The panicked relatives immediately lowered the casket and opened it up, only to find Callaca breathing and moving. "[She] opened her eyes and was sweating. I immediately went to my office and called the police," cemetery caretaker Juan Segundo Cajo was quoted by the news outlet.
She was immediately taken to the Referential Hospital Ferrenafe in Lambayeque, a city on the coast of northern Peru. An examination revealed signs of life in her. She was placed on a life-support machine by the doctors but died a few hours later.
The enraged relatives have accused the health staff at the Lambayeque Regional Hospital, where Callaca was first treated, of medical negligence.
"We want to know why my niece reacted yesterday, when we were taking her to be buried," Rosa’s aunt was quoted by the news website. "We have the videos in which she pushes and touches the coffin."
After the news came out, Peruvian Police launched an investigation into the incident. The officers believe the hospital, which treated her certified her death without proper review and sent her body to the morgue.
A similar incident was reported in Lebanon recently wherein a "dead" man was found alive seconds before being buried. Reports said the "dead" man was laid in the coffin and his funeral service was underway when a group of mourners around him saw the coffin move. The people immediately performed CPR on the man, following which he showed signs of life. An ambulance was called, and he was rushed to receive medical treatment at a hospital.
