Why Richard Sherman is hesitant about Steelers rookie QB Kenny Pickett

The 2022 NFL Draft may be over, but the chatter about quarterback Kenny Pickett’s hands isn’t going away.

NFL cornerback Richard Sherman weighed in on the Steelers’ first-round selection during the latest installment of his podcast, noting he isn’t certain Pickett is the long-term answer given the quarterback’s dependence on a certain accessory.

“Do I think he’s the quarterback of the future? I don’t know,” Sherman said, per Steelers Depot. “It’s hard for me to trust a quarterback who wears gloves all the time. It’s just different. It’s just different. I just, I have a hard time with it. But he slings it. He’s effective and we’ll see how effective he is in Pittsburgh. They do a great job developing guys.”

Pickett’s hand size had been a topic of conversation leading up to the draft after they measured 8 1/2 inches at the NFL combine earlier this year. At his pro day, they measured in at 8 5/8 inches, a slight improvement.

The former University of Pittsburgh product, 23, became the first quarterback selected in this year’s NFL Draft, sliding to the Steelers midway through the first round. Although Pittsburgh signed veteran journeyman Mitch Trubisky to a two-year, $14.25 million deal in March, head coach Mike Tomlin believes Pickett “certainly has a chance” to start Week 1.

“It was two things that really attracted us to him from a floor standpoint,” Tomlin recently told NFL Network. “We thought he had pro-level anticipation. We thought he had pro-level accuracy. Oftentimes, those are two variables that really require a lot of adjustment from a quarterbacking standpoint. We felt he came ready-made in those ways. Hopefully, that’s an asset to him in terms of being able to compete and being ready, if his performance dictates it.”

When Pickett does take the field, expect the New Jersey native’s fiancée, Princeton University senior Amy Paternoster, to be cheering him on in the stands.

The couple, who announced their engagement in January, recently enjoyed a Philadelphia date night at a 76ers game.
