The U.S. Capitol Police have arrested seven people who identified themselves as being afflated with the CBS “Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
On Friday, the Capitol Police revealed the unauthorized individuals were arrested in a congressional office building on Thursday and charged with unlawful entry.
Capitol Police first received a report around 8:30 p.m. about a disturbance in the Longworth House Office Building.
“Responding officers observed seven individuals, unescorted and without Congressional ID, in a sixth-floor hallway,” the USCP said in a statement.
“The building was closed to visitors, and these individuals were determined to be a part of a group that had been directed by the USCP to leave the building earlier in the day.”
Renata Luczak, vice president of entertainment communications at CBS, revealed a production team for the Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, voiced by Robert Smigel, was at the Capitol on Wednesday and Thursday to shoot a comedy segment for the late-night talk show.
“Their interviews at the Capitol were authorized and pre-arranged through Congressional aides of the members interviewed,” Luczak said in a statement.
“After leaving the members’ office on their last interview of the day, the production team stayed to film stand-ups and other final comedy elements in the halls when they were detained by Capitol Police.”
While the names of those arrested have not been released, the U.S. Capitol Police stated the incident remains “an active criminal investigation.” Additional criminal charges may be filed after the agency consults with the U.S. Attorney.
The arrest came after the third public hearing of the House’s investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
