‘Transformers’ and ‘G.I. Joe’ Crossover Confirmed as Next Live-Action Film: Script in Development

The ‘Transformers‘ and ‘G.I. Joe‘s crossover has been confirmed as the next live-action ‘Transformers’ film by Transformers One producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. The script is currently in development.

In a recent interview with Collider—following the release of Transformers One—Lorenzo di Bonaventura stated that, despite discussions of another G.I. Joe standalone film and a Transformers: Rise of the Beasts trilogy, the next live-action project for both franchises will be a crossover. This upcoming crossover film will mark the first time both franchises appear together in live-action. He also confirmed that Transformers One—with its emotional perspective on the bots—will influence how they are portrayed in future live-action films.

Paramount Transformers G.I. Joe Crossover Derek Connolly to Write Script

Di Bonaventura revealed that there will be a separate animated Transformers project—existing independently from the live-action films. The emotional depth showcased in Transformers One will influence the storytelling approach in the live-action crossover.

He said, “Well, we’re going, again, subject to success, we’re going to do a sequel to this, and there will be an animated version, and it will exist completely separately to whatever we do live-action.” He added, “The next live-action movie will be a crossover. Where it will be particularly affected is the fact that we now know what these robots are capable of emotionally in a way. So we’re going to have to figure out how to create that room, that we can afford that, and create a story that you can take more advantage of that. So one of the things that I’m particularly interested in doing, and we’re still in the development phase, so nothing is by any means written in stone, but I think we need to do more now from the robot point of view in the live-action because that’s the only way you’re really going to get inside them.”

Paramount and Hasbro are developing the crossover film. Derek Connolly (Detective Pikachu, Jurassic World) is set to write the script for Paramount’s untitled Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover action project. There are also talks that Chris Hemsworth (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Extraction 2, Thor: Love and Thunder) may star in the film.

The upcoming film will be a sequel to last year’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which ended with Anthony Ramos’ character, Noah Diaz, being invited to join the secret military organization G.I. Joe.

Produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Michael Bay, Tom DeSanto, and Don Murphy. Steven Spielberg and Hasbro Entertainment will executive produce.

Transformers One will hit theaters in the United States on September 20, 2024, distributed by Paramount Pictures.
