Tim Tebow’s Jaguars OTAs uneventful after flashy start

The Tim Tebow hype has subsided, for now.

The 33-year-old, who’s on an NFL comeback journey with the Jaguars, has yet to deliver an a-ha moment that proves he’s deserving of a roster spot at tight end — a position he’s never played.

A described “low-key” Tebow has been silently present at eight offseason practices in Jacksonville, where he’s focused on learning the Xs and Os of the position, according to the Florida Times-Union.

In his attempt to prove his worth on a young roster under his former college coach Urban Meyer, Tebow’s getting limited reps in a tight end locker room that includes Chris Manhertz, James O’Shaughnessy, rookie Luke Farrell, Ben Ellefson, and Tyler Davis.

And, he’s sharing the spotlight equally with his counterparts — something many believed wouldn’t happen when Tebow arrived in Jacksonville — following the media firestorm that ensued when he announced his hopeful NFL return.

In the Jags’ first open practice to the media on May 27, Tebow impressed with two short-yardage touchdowns, among other flashes in the days that followed.

On Tuesday, Tebow showed consistency with catching, despite being stagnant in 11-on-11 drills, where neither of Jacksonville’s quarterbacks, Trevor Lawrence, Gardner Minshew or C.J. Beathard, delivered a pass his way.

A usual talkative Tebow has also been quiet with media. The 6-foot-3, 255-pound quarterback-turned tight end, has yet to address his NFL comeback and reunion with Meyer.

“You wish you could see and do [more],” Meyer said, according to the Times-Union. “In spring football, you have full pads and scrimmages, and you can really evaluate, but it’s kind of tough right now.”

Another consistency of Tebow’s, Meyer said, has been his go-getter attitude.

“Oh, Tim has done a decent job. We all know this is a new position for him. He’s a great teammate. In the locker room, I can see everybody getting along, we have good chemistry on our team,” Meyer said. “But he’s picked it up decently.”

Despite Meyer’s optimism, he’s treating his collegiate champion like any other Jags player.

“What’s the percentage of making the team? We don’t know. This is uncharted waters,” Meyer said about Tebow on “The Rich Eisen Show” last week. “This is going to be very difficult, but he’s been doing great. He’s been doing great in practice. He’s learning the offense.”

The Jaguars’ mandatory minicamp starts Tuesday, with training camp beginning on July 27.

Maybe then, Tebow will emerge as a shiny hybrid tool for the Jags offense.
