'SNL' Called Out For Disrespecting Johnny Depp In Comedy Skit, Accused Of 'Victim-Blaming'

KEY POINTS

  • Andy Signore called out "SNL" for missing the humor in its Johnny Depp sketch
  • Signore said that the program still believes Amber Heard because she's a woman
  • The Popcorned Planet host lauded Chris Rock for publicly picking a side

Andy Signore and his viewers slammed "Saturday Night Live" for how Johnny Depp was portrayed in a comical skit.

Signore, of Popcorned Planet, was visibly upset with "SNL's" take on Depp and Amber Heard's defamation trial. In a clip uploaded to his YouTube channel, Signore said, "'SNL' disrespects Johnny Depp" in its "trash cold open trial skit" Saturday.

He showed a clip from the segment and criticized the show for being too afraid to pick a side that "they miss so many opportunities at humor and bringing us all together." He also felt that the program was very careful when it came to Heard but not with Depp. Signore speculated that someone at NBC was responsible for not making fun of Heard.

"Right there, there is proof of why it was not only disrespectful to Johnny the way that they had to like twist it and still blame him at the end," he said

Signore was referring to the line when Kyle Mooney, who played Depp, was told, "Well you're a nightmare. You must have made so many women poop in your bed."

"Say's who?" Signore asked while making his commentary. "Says this one crazy person that you refuse to even poke fun at?"

According to Signore, comedian Heidi Gardner could have played Heard in the skit. He wondered why the actress didn't take the stand and play the "Aquaman" star instead, "doing the dry crying" and "making fun of Amber."

"You would have been trending worldwide all over TikTok. It would have been massive and I believe, you could have done it so well," he continued addressing Gardner. "Why didn't you guys have the guts to go there?"

Signore believed that the program was "afraid to be non-politically correct" because at present, "everyone still has to believe Amber" for the reason that "she's still the woman." He continued by praising comedian Chris Rock for seemingly publicly supporting Depp by subtly shading Heard in his gig in the U.K.

"Believe all women, believe all women… except Amber Heard… What the f–k is she on? She s–t in his bed! She’s fine but she’s not s–tting fine," the comedian was quoted as saying in a segment in which he joked about cancel culture. "She s--t in his bed. Once you s–t in someone’s bed, you [are] just guilty of everything."

Signore clapped his hands for Rock for "going against the curve." He said Rock was not afraid and that's why he's funny.

Several netizens who saw Signore's commentary agreed with him.

"YES! Thank you for speaking what 99% of us know. Who tf makes fun of a victim? Just because he’s a man? Disgusting! Shame on 'SNL,'" Julie M commented on the video.

"Johnny Depp doesn't smirk that's a nervous smile he's done it all his life. 'SNL' needs to learn the difference between [a] smirk and [a] nervous smile," Katherine Caywood added.

Many also criticized "SNL" because they felt that they were "victim-blaming" Depp.

"'SNL' telling Johnny that he was abused because of his attitude... How horrible to say to someone who was abused. It's victim-blaming," one wrote. Another added. "They are basically saying that Johnny is a nightmare that caused this on himself. So 'SNL' is okay with victim-blaming if it's at the expense of a man."

Depp is suing Heard for $50 million for a 2018 op-ed she wrote about being a domestic violence survivor. The "Fantastic Beasts" actor alleged that the write-up was about him even if it did not mention him by name and claimed that it ruined his reputation and career.

The defamation trial between Depp and Heard was on hiatus last week and will resume Monday.
