Shedeur Sanders’ warm MSG welcome sparks Giants draft chatter

Welcome to New York, Shedeur Sanders.

The star Colorado Buffaloes quarterback and son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders received a warm welcome Wednesday from the Madison Square Garden crowd as he took in the Knicks’ 108-100 loss to the Hawks courtside.

Appearing on the Jumbotron, the 22-year-old Sanders — regarded as one of the top prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft — stood up and raised his arms as cheers rained down from inside the Garden.

Although the draft is still months away, it’s clear New York is taken with Sanders, who is already on the Giants’ radar.

Currently poised for a top-two pick, the 2-11 Giants are without a long-term answer at quarterback following the November release of veteran Daniel Jones.

Jones was just two seasons into a four-year, $160 million contract extension when the Giants benched him after a 2-8 start. He later asked for his release after a fourth-string demotion and has since signed with the Vikings.

The Giants are riding out the remainder of the season with Drew Lock and fan favorite Tommy DeVito, who will start Sunday against the Ravens.

General manager Joe Schoen attended one of Sanders’ practices in November.

Although Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll received votes of confidence from co-owner John Mara in October, it remains to be seen if there will be a giant shakeup as the team is currently riding an eight-game skid.

Miami’s Cam Ward and Alabama’s Jalen Milroe are the other top quarterbacks in the draft.

Should Schoen and Daboll get the opportunity to select their own quarterback, and if said quarterback happens to be Sanders, he’s already got a connection in the locker room.

“Me and him are in the same class, and it was always like I’m aware of my competition,” wide receiver Malik Nabers recalled Wednesday of Sanders when discussing their past appearance at Deion’s football camp as college football recruits.

“He wasn’t in competition with me, but it was just the fact that it was Deion Sanders and Deion Sanders’ son so you always wanted to watch what those guys were doing. They did it at a high level wherever they went, so it’s amazing and impressive to see what he has done.”

Despite being linked to the Giants, it seems another team could welcome Sanders’ services.

In a video taken from a February 2024 event, Deion told current Raiders coach Antonio Pierce, “You truly are the best… Now I just need you to do one thing — I need you to draft those Sanders boys.”

Much like the Giants, the Raiders (2-11) are in the mix for the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft — and currently own the tiebreaker for the top spot.

Sanders and the Buffaloes finished the 2024 season at 9-3 with Deion at the helm.
