Sandy Alderson getting another Mets chance — and it could include Theo Epstein

Sandy Alderson will receive another chance to help dictate the future of the Mets baseball operations.

Steve Cohen has decided that he and Alderson will jointly work to hire a president of baseball operations this offseason, according to sources familiar with the Mets’ plans.

The new president of baseball operations will then be empowered to hire a staff, including a general manager — though that does not preclude Zack Scott, the club’s acting GM who is currently on administrative leave after pleading not guilty to driving while intoxicated on Sept. 2, from returning in some form, including as GM, sources said.

Once the new front office is in place, Alderson — who recently assumed GM duties in Scott’s absence — will fully return to his role as team president with a focus on the business side of the organization. Newsday was first to report that Alderson, 73, would return next season.

Theo Epstein, the architect of curse-breaking titles with the Red Sox and Cubs, is the highest-profile potential candidate and, sources say, Cohen is open to considering Epstein.

Hiring a president of baseball ops was the plan for Alderson last offseason after Cohen bought the team and hired him to be president with a focus on business. Instead, the Mets’ search came up empty and they settled on hiring Jared Porter as general manager and Scott as assistant GM.

A month later, Porter was fired after he was revealed to have sent lewd text messages to a female reporter while working for the Cubs. Scott was then named acting GM and served in that role before being put on leave in the wake of his arraignment. Alderson took on GM duties — the role he served in from 2010-18 — as the Mets entered the final month of the regular season.

Last week, Alderson declined to say whether it was possible that Scott would return to the organization.

Alderson’s last three high-profile hires — Scott, Porter and ex-manager Mickey Callaway, who is currently suspended through 2022 by MLB for sexual harassment — have all landed in embarrassing situations.

“It’s incredibly unfortunate and I am personally chagrined by the whole thing, but to a large extent they are unrelated, each one of them, and I am not sure it points to a single flaw in our hiring process,” Alderson said last week. “But it’s obviously caused us to take a hard look at it, which we continue to do.”
