Raiders could get out of Jimmy Garoppolo contract if foot injury lingers

Addendum G might end up being one of the most relevant — and complicated — parts of Jimmy Garoppolo’s contract with the Raiders.

The quarterback is still recovering from a fractured foot sustained in Week 13 of the 2022 season and the Raiders protected themselves because of it his contract.

The addendum starts by stating that Garoppolo “would not pass the Club’s physical examination” and therefore wouldn’t be able to sign a contract with the Raiders, where he reunited with former Patriots offensive coordinator — and now Las Vegas head coach — Josh McDaniels.

There’s also reportedly a scenario where the team could cut him at any point without owing any money due to the lingering foot injury.

But if Garoppolo, 31, is on the Raiders’ 53-man roster two days after the 2023 season ends, then the addendum and waiver becomes “null and void,” according to an image of the clause tweeted by NFL Network.

ProFootballTalk also reported the clause becomes void if Garoppolo becomes active for one 2023 regular-season game, passes a physical and doesn’t reinjure that left foot — though that portion wasn’t included in the screenshot of the revealed clause.

The fracture in his left foot, which caused Garoppolo to have surgery, he “will be at an increased risk of further injury” if he continues playing. The addendum listed that as some of the possible complications, including “permanent disability,” “loss of motion” and surgery.

The Athletic reported Thursday that Garoppolo underwent his surgery after signing a three-year deal with the Raiders in March.

The contract includes an out after two seasons, according to Spotrac.

“We don’t play a game for 100 days,” McDaniels told reporters Thursday, though he didn’t specify that Garoppolo needed surgery. “Everything that’s happened since we signed Jimmy, we knew ahead of time. … Certainly had an awareness of all of it. Our preference is not to push it and rush anybody back at this point in time.”

Garoppolo started 10 games for the 49ers in 2022 following a season-ending injury to Trey Lance, and he completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 2,437 yards, 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions.

Following his injury against the Dolphins in December, Brock Purdy, the Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 NFL Draft, took over as San Francisco’s starting quarterback and guided the 49ers to the NFC Championship game — where they suffered a season-ending loss to the Eagles when Purdy, too, exited with an injury.
