PFL returns to Theater at MSG with two August playoff events

Twice in one week, major MMA will invade New York.

The PFL will host two of its season’s playoff events at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, one on Aug. 18 and the next on Aug. 23.

The pair of fight cards mark PFL’s return to the venue after hosting its annual championship event last November.

The first Garden event, taking place on a Friday evening, is to feature the PFL season semifinalists in both the heavyweight and women’s featherweight divisions.

The other fight card, a midweek event slated for Wednesday, showcases the welterweight and lightweight semifinals.

A third playoff event will be held Aug. 4 in San Antonio to determine the finalists for PFL’s men’s featherweight and light heavyweight divisions.

The winners of the semifinal bouts advance to the championship event, likely in the fall, to determine each of the six $1 million prize-winning champs for 2023.

Tickets, which begin at $29, for the events will be available for presale on June 19 and to the general public on June 20.

The PFL begins the second and final leg of its regular season in Atlanta on Thursday (10 p.m., ESPN/ESPN+) with men’s featherweights and light heavyweights competing to determine the semifinalists.

The heavyweight and women’s featherweight divisions return to action on June 16, followed by the final regular-season event June 23 featuring welterweights and lightweights — including Bronx-born Shane Burgos.

In the women’s weight class, Amber Leibrock (6 points), Marina Mokhnatkina (5), Larissa Pacheco (3) and Evelyn Martins (3) make up the current top four.

Only three heavyweights enter the second leg of the season with points — Denis Goltsov (6), Maurice Greene (5) and Danilo Marques (3) — after 2021 season champion Bruno Cappelozza and Rizvan Kuniev were removed from the season due to Nevada State Athletic Commission suspensions for banned substances.

At welterweight, three fighters — Magomed Umalatov, Magomed Magomedkerimov and Carlos Leal — each have six points while reigning champion Sadibou Sy has five.

Five lightweights are tied with five points after the first event: 2022 champ Olivier Aubin-Mercier, two-time champion Natan Schulte, 2021 season winner Raush Manfio, Clay Collard and Bruno Miranda.
