Yankees’ Rougned Odor goes on injured list after home plate collision

Rougned Odor was placed on the 10-day IL on Wednesday with a left knee sprain, the Yankees announced.

Right-hander Albert Abreu was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take Odor’s spot on the roster.

Odor was injured in a collision at home plate with Houston catcher Martin Maldonado during the sixth inning of Tuesday night’s win at Yankee Stadium. The second baseman had to be helped off the field after his left leg bent awkwardly as he appeared to slip on the plate and make contact with Maldonado, who also exited the game.

Tyler Wade replaced Odor at second for the remainder of the game and Odor underwent an MRI exam.

Odor will now likely be out until Luke Voit comes back from his rehab following surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus in his left knee during spring training.

Voit is set to play his second rehab game for SWB on Wednesday night, with his first game action at first base. He had two hits — including a double — and a walk in his first game back on Tuesday. Aaron Boone said Tuesday Voit could be back on the next road trip, which begins Tuesday at Tampa Bay.

When Odor gets back, he figures to have less of a role, with Voit returning to first base, DJ LeMahieu to second, with Gio Urshela at third base and Gleyber Torres at shortstop.

The Yankees’ infield defense has been better of late, with LeMahieu at first and Odor at second — and Torres improving a bit at short, partially due to the Yankees’ shifting him to the left side of second base when possible.
