Things get testy at Jets camp as two scuffles break out

Observations from Jets camp on Sunday.

Joe Cool

Joe Flacco completed 16 of 19 passes in team periods, with a heavy focus on checkdowns to running backs and tight ends. He held the ball too long on his second drop-back (would’ve been a sack instead of a completion to Elijah Moore) and sped up his internal clock from there. Bryce Hall intercepted a Flacco overthrow on a miscommunication.

Fight Club

There were two more scuffles, so the Jets didn’t get all their frustrations out just by playing another opponent. OT Grant Hermanns and OLB Carl Lawson exchanged punches before they were pulled apart. WR Garrett Wilson challenged DT Nathan Shepherd face-to-face after Shepherd ripped the ball out of Wilson’s hands after the whistle.

Caught My Eye

Two rookies flashed to continue strong camps. Fourth-round DL Michael Clemons routinely got into the backfield against the second-team offensive line. Undrafted WR Calvin Jackson Jr. made a leaping catch of a high throw on a bubble screen and hit the crease as soon as his feet touched the ground for a well-blocked big gain.

Medical Report

S Lamarcus Joyner (illness) did not practice. CB D.J. Reed, DE Vinny Curry and CB Brandin Echols worked on the side with trainers. Among OTs, Chuma Edoga only practiced in the first-team period, Conor McDermott did not practice and OT Mekhi Becton is visiting Dr. Neal ElAttrache for a second opinion on his knee before the Jets put him on season-ending injured reserve, which remains the expectation.
