Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange Sequel Idea ‘Entirely’ Different from ‘Multiverse of Madness’

Scott Derrickson, the director of Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange‘ film, revealed that his sequel idea was “entirely” different from ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ directed by Sam Raimi.

Derrickson’s ‘Doctor Strange’ remains one of the best films in the MCU, as the brilliance added to the film is very special. The sequel is entirely different, with Raimi’s version joining Elizabeth Olsen‘s Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch alongside Benedict Cumberbatch‘s Doctor Strange.

On Twitter (X), when a fan asked Derrickson if the ‘Doctor Strange’ sequel would be very different from Sam Raimi’s sequel, Derrickson replied, “Entirely.”

Why Did Scott Derrickson Leave the ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel?

During The Discourse Podcast, Derrickson explained why he exited the sequel.

Derrickson said, “All I can say is that what we said publicly is exactly the truth. We had real creative differences. You know, the movie I wanted to make and how I wanted to make it was different than–it was just increasingly obvious that we were pulling against each other. And that’s how you make a really bad movie, I think. When the producer or the studio and the filmmaker are making different movies, you end up with a monstrosity and, you know, that’s why I had to bounce.”

Derrickson left the sequel due to creative differences between him and Marvel. Doctor Strange writer C. Robert Cargill confirmed this in an interview around the film’s release.

Speaking to CinemaBlend, Cargill said, “It was creative differences. [Scott Derrickson] wanted to do one movie, and Marvel wanted to do another movie.” Cargill added, “So he sat there and said, ‘Well, s***, I’ve got this great script that I wrote with Cargill, and I’m really proud of it.’ We were actually going to go out to other directors for The Black Phone, and Scott was like, he called me up and said, ‘Dude, I have to make this movie. It’s got to be my movie; I have to do this. Do you mind waiting until after I’m done with [Doctor Strange 2]? He really wanted to bring me onto Strange as well. But in the event that it didn’t happen, he was like, ‘Do you mind waiting?’ And I was like, ‘You know what? If you feel this passionately about it, no. I’ll wait a couple of years to make this movie.'”

‘Doctor Strange’ and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ are now available on Disney+.
