Robert Downey Jr. Open to Returning as Iron Man in the MCU, Says He Would ‘Happily’ Reprise Role

Robert Downey Jr. stated that he would happily return to the MCU after winning his first Oscar for his role as Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer,’ for which he won Best Supporting Actor.

Will Robert Downey Jr. Return as Iron Man?

Currently, the MCU needs a backup, hinting that the original Avengers could still save it. Downey Jr. has mentioned that the Iron Man role was specifically chosen for him, so if Marvel President Kevin Feige calls him back, he will return.

In a new Esquire cover story, Downey was asked if he would return to the MCU again.

Downey replied, “Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me. And look, I always say, Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”

In a recent Vanity Fair cover story about Downey Jr., Feige discussed the possibility of Iron Man returning to the MCU. Feige mentioned they don’t plan to revisit that moment, as closing Iron Man’s story took a lot of work, and they don’t want to reverse it.

Feige said, “We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again. We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.”

There are also rumors that Downey Jr. is part of ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ scheduled for May 7, 2027. If he comes back, Marvel could earn another $2 billion, as fans are eagerly awaiting Iron Man’s return.
