Red Sox star Triston Casas suffers rib fracture in Boston injury blow

The Red Sox will be without Triston Casas for a lengthy period of time.

The Boston first baseman will be out indefinitely after he broke a rib on the left side of his body while swinging during Saturday’s game in Pittsburgh.

Manager Alex Cora revealed the injury before the Red Sox opened their series with the Guardians in Cleveland on Tuesday.

“He’ll be out for a while,” Cora told reporters, according to The Associated Press. “We just have to be patient. It has to heal on its own, so we just have to be patient.”

The initial thought had been that Casas was dealing with a left rib cage strain, but after undergoing an MRI on Monday, the team discovered the fracture.

There is no timetable for when Casas will return to action, but Cora expects his first baseman to play again at some point this season.

The Red Sox skipper also revealed that Casas had told him last week that his rib had been bothering him during a series with the Guardians.

The issue became exacerbated during a first-inning at-bat Saturday against the Pirates.

“He’s still in a lot of pain and it’s difficult to rest that way,” Cora said. “Obviously, he’s disappointed, but it is what it is. There’s nothing we can do, just got to be patient.”

It appeared Casas had been injured on a 3-1 pitch that he fouled off to the first base side of the field.

Casas took a big hack at the pitch and appeared to grab at his midsection as he walked away from the batter’s box.

He walked and then came out of the game in the bottom half of the inning.

Casas has started 21 of the Red Sox’s first 22 games at first and has a slash line of .244/.344/.513 this season while hitting six home runs and collecting 10 RBIs.

The Boston manager called Casas a “force” offensively.

“He’s very important, but we’ve got to keep going, man, and we’re not going to stop,” Cora said.
