Nier Automata Crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it?

The 2010s were a particularly great decade for video games, thanks to titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto V, The Last of Us, and many, many more. And among these was PlantinumGames’ Nier: Automata. Released in February of 2017, the game received incredible reviews from critics and fans alike, with major praise going towards its characters, and excellent story. Since its release, the game has been ported to different platforms, including the Nintendo Switch. And with the rise in popularity of PC handhelds, fans have also been enjoying it on the Steam Deck. Unfortunately, some players have complained about a crashing issue.

If you didn’t already know, Nier: Automata isn’t a Steam Deck Verified title. However, it’s one of the many games that run flawlessly on the Deck, without even needing any tweaks. But crashing issues are also something players have to deal with every once in a while, for one reason or another. Sometimes it could be caused by an outdated OS, while at other times it could be a compatibility issue. Regardless of what the cause here is, this issue needs to be resolved. So, let’s go ahead and find out if there are any fixes to it.

Since there are no official workarounds for this, players will have to make do with the following workarounds. Try these and see if any of them are of help.

Run the Cryobyte scripts –

A player was able to fix this issue by rerunning the Cryobyte script. So, if you don’t happen to have CryoUtilies installed, do so. Make sure to increase your Deck’s swap file size to 16 GB, switch to the Recommended setting, and do a game data cleanup if you want.

Update

Make sure that both the Steam OS and the game have their latest version installed. This can help you avoid a lot of issues and could also possibly resolve this one. However, if even updating doesn’t work, then try some other workaround.

Switch to another Proton version –

We also recommend switching to another Proton version. Players can start with Proton Experimental and if that doesn’t help, choose a different one. A lot of players had success dealing with this crashing issue using this method, so give it a try.

Reset Steam Deck APU drivers –

For some, resetting the APU drivers of their Steam Deck was what helped them deal with this issue. And you can do that too by following the instructions below:

  • Close all apps and games and power off your Steam Deck.

  • Next, hold down the Volume Down button along with the Quick Access button […] and then press the Power button. After you hear one or two beeps, release the Power button.

  • This will reset the drivers. Now just wait for the Deck to boot.

Move the game to internal storage –

If you happen to have Nier Automata installed on your SD card, we highly suggest that you transfer it to the Deck’s internal storage. A lot of crashing issues had been fixed this way, and it might do the same with this one too.

Re-image your system –

Players can also try fully re-imaging the system and see if that helps. Do note that this will perform a full factory reset of the Deck, so be ready to download everything once again. After you are done with this, make sure to set TDP to 12, GPU to 1400 MHz, and have Dynamic Shaders turned on.
