Nia DaCosta to Direct Second Film in ’28 Years Later’ Trilogy

Nia DaCosta (‘The Marvels’ and ‘Candyman’) is set to direct the second film in the ‘28 Years Later‘ trilogy.

The first film in the ’28 Years Later’ new trilogy is already reported to be directed by Danny Boyle from a screenplay co-written with Alex Garland. Also, ’28 Days Later’ star Cillian Murphy will serve as an executive producer.

In the first film, there are rumors that Jodie Comer will star alongside Murphy. The filming is scheduled to begin in May 2024, with the second film shooting immediately afterward.

DaCosta previously directed the horror thriller ‘Candyman’, a contemporary spiritual sequel to the 1992 cult horror classic. She also recently directed and co-wrote the MCU’s ‘The Marvels,’ starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani. Her upcoming movie, ‘Hedda‘, which she wrote, directed, and produced, is a visceral reimagination of the famed Henrik Ibsen stage play ‘Hedda Gabler’, starring Tessa Thompson, and it’s produced by MGM Orion Pictures and Plan B.

’28 Days Later’ was released in 2002, directed by Boyle. It follows a post-apocalyptic London where a viral outbreak turns people into rage-filled zombies. The story centers on survivor Jim (Murphy), as he navigates the desolate cityscape with fellow survivors. The sequel, ’28 Weeks Later,’ released in 2007 and directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, continues the saga six months after the first film. It depicts efforts to rebuild London under US military supervision, which are disrupted by a new outbreak. The sequel features intense action sequences.

Produced by Sony Pictures Releasing, DNA Films, and Decibel Films.
