Xdefiant crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it

Xdefiant crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it

Ubisoft’s free-to-play fps – XDefiant, is set to release soon, although no set date has been announced so far. The game continues to receive server test sessions, with the most recent one starting and lasting from April 19th to 21st. Since the game happens to be available on PC, many players have gone on to install it on their Steam Decks, opting to enjoy it there too. Unfortunately, there’s this crashing issue that’s been troubling a lot of players.

XDefiant isn’t officially supported for the Steam Deck. As such, the only way to play it right now is by either dual-booting Windows on the Deck or by using other tools, which is what players are doing. And since XDefiant isn’t Verified for the Deck, there’s also no official fix for these crashing issues. So, can this issue be fixed? Well, of course. So, let’s go ahead and check all of them out.

The following workarounds will help you deal with this issue. Try them and see which ones are helpful to you.

Use Lutris –

For those using Windows dual-boot to play XDefiant on the Deck, you can also use Lutris to do the same. All you need to do is, switch to Desktop Mode on your Steam Deck and then install Lutris via Discover Store. Once that’s done, launch Lutris and install Ubisoft Connect. Next, launch Ubisoft Connect, sign in with your account, and then download and install the XDefiant beta. Start the game and check if the crashes still occur. If it does, use the next workaround.

Disable Esync and Fsync –

For Lutris users, we suggest disabling Esync and Fsync. For this, you simply need to open Lutris, select Ubisoft Connect there, and press the left trigger on your Steam Deck. Next, select Configure from the options present and then switch to the Running Options tab. Under the Graphics section, you will find both Enable Esync and Enable Fsync options. If it’s enabled, toggle it off.

Ensure that Anti-Cheat is turned on –

XDefiant will not run without anti-cheat. So, make sure that it’s turned on in the Lutris options. To do that, follow the same steps mentioned in the previous workaround. When you are in the Running options tab, you will find Enable BattlEye Anti-Cheat and Enable Easy Anti-Cheat options. Enabled them both.

Use lutris-ge-lol-8.7-1-x86 64 –

Make sure that you are using the lutris-ge-lol-8.7-1-x86 64 Wine version. This version is what most players recommend, so ensure that you are using this one. And it’s pretty simple to select this version. You just need to open Lutris, select Wine under Runner, and click on the Install button next to lutris-ge-lol-8.7-1. Once it’s installed, open Ubisoft Connect’s Configure menu, switch to Runner options, and select lutris-ge-lol-8.7-1-x86_64 as the Wine version from the drop-down menu.

Update your SteamOS –

A pretty common cause behind crashing issues can be traced back to outdated system versions. And in the case of XDefiant crashing on the Deck, it could be a major factor too. That’s why, we highly encourage you to download the latest available Steam Deck update. In case, you’ve already done that, switch to another fix.

Reinstall –

If you are still experiencing this issue, then reinstalling might help. Simply uninstall XDefiant from your Deck and start a new download via Ubisoft Connect. When the installation is done, launch it, and hopefully, there will be no more crashes.
