WNBA stars go to battle over highlight: ‘Girl shut tf up!’

Phoenix Mercury guard Skylar Diggins-Smith pulled off a nasty move against the Liberty Saturday night. The nastiness didn’t end there, however.

When Bleacher Report posted the highlight Sunday evening on Twitter, New York guard Jazmine Jones — a 16-point scorer in the 85-83 Liberty win — had some words.

“Yeah but caught the L. Hyping up the wrong stuff. How about hyping my girl Betnijah!!!!! Tf,” Jones wrote in a quote-tweet, referring to teammate Betnijah Laney and her 23-point and 10-assist effort.

This drew the ire of Diggins-Smith, who quickly clapped back.

“Girl shut tf up!” Diggins-Smith wrote. “They can’t post a highlight? Complain to your organization, first, why they only hype one person!”

The “one person” Diggins-Smith is likely referring to is Sabrina Ionescu, the No. 1 overall pick by the Liberty in 2020.

Jones’ team did have her back, however. The Liberty’s account, not content to watch the drama unfold, tweeted a picture of a smiling Jones — quickly answered by the Mercury account with a shot Diggins that read, “Didn’t know Monday was comedy night.”

Players around the league certainly took notice of the heat.

“when’s there beef going down but it ain’t mine for once,” Las Vegas Aces center Elizabeth Cambage tweeted.

“The bottom line is: if you got your ankles snatched but your team got the W…you still got your ankles snatched,” Sydney Colson, who played for the Chicago Sky in 2020, wrote.

The bad feelings will have a few more weeks to simmer, with the Mercury and Liberty not slated to see one another until Aug. 25. It seems unlikely to be forgotten in the meantime.

“Girl Shut tf up” is fighting words … so what’s really good,” Jones tweeted.
