The H.E.A.R.T. Program

The H.E.A.R.T. Program (Housing, Entrepreneurship And Readiness Training) is a nonprofit organization based in Houston, Texas dedicated to fostering independence among adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), the program focuses on providing comprehensive employment training and job placement assistance. According to their website, their mission is to “empower individuals with disabilities through innovative employment training programs.” H.E.A.R.T.’s philosophy is that everyone deserves the opportunity to excel and experience the sense of pride and accomplishment that is achieved through education and employment.

The H.E.A.R.T. Program began in 2006 with the goal of empowering people through employment. Established under the Educational Programs Inspiring Communities nonprofit, H.E.A.R.T. has now helped hundreds of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities gain job skills and placements. Trainees actively manage over 60 vending machines across the Houston area and work over 150 concession stands each year. The program provides training and mentoring so everyone can learn valuable skills to earn at least minimum wage.

H.E.A.R.T. has received recognition for its impactful contributions to the community. The mayor’s office awarded it the “Mayor’s Proud Partner” for its contributions. In 2012, Leadership Houston presented H.E.A.R.T. with a “Leadership in Action” award as well. Their work is made possible through the support of the community, both in terms of volunteering time and financial contributions.

Individuals like Sue Davis, a seasoned PR and political strategist, exemplify this spirit of community involvement. Sue has dedicated her time, resources, and energy to further H.E.A.R.T.’s empowering mission. Notably, she recently completed a 5K to raise funds for their cause, serving as a reminder to others that there is still time to contribute and support this transformative initiative.
