‘Spinal Tap’ stars Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, more back in costume decades after original

Spinal Tap is ready for their encore.

Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Rob Reiner, who appeared in the 1984 cult rock mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap,” were spotted filming the movie’s long-awaited sequel last week in New Orleans.

Pictures obtained by The Post show McKean, 76, who played band frontman David St. Hubbins in the first film 40 years ago, dressed in a red velvet suit and long blonde wig as he plays the guitar in a mariachi band.

Director Reiner, 77, who also portrayed interviewer Marty DiBergi in the original, was spotted visiting Paul Shaffer, 74, — aka promo-man Artie Fufkin — in his pre-reunion occupation as a second-hand car dealer.

Guest, 76, who played Nigel Tufnell in the first installment, was photographed with long grey hair and dressed in a leather jacket, ready to join the band.

Harry Sheerer, 80, was noticeably absent from the shoot last week but was photographed on set this week, reprising his role as Derek Smalls.

McKean, Guest, and Shearer all played real concerts as their “Spinal Tap” characters in 2009.

The new film will mimic the style of Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Waltz” and follow the fictional band’s quest to reunite after a 15-year hiatus for one last concert.

Elton John, Paul McCartney, Questlove, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood are all set to make cameos in “Spinal Tap II.”

Last year, Reiner reflected on the surprising success of the orignal film during an episode of his “Who Killed JFK?” podcast.

“When we first previewed it, we previewed it in a theater in Dallas, Texas, and people … they didn’t know what the heck they were looking at,” he recalled.

“They came up to me afterward and said, ‘I don’t understand. Why would you make a movie about a band that nobody’s ever heard of? And they’re so bad! Why would you do that?’” Reiner said. “They said, ‘You should make a movie about the Beatles or the Rolling Stones.’”

“I said, ‘Well, it’s a satire,’” Reiner remembered. “I tried to explain, you know. But over the years, people got it, and they started to like it.”

A release date for “Spinal Tap II” has yet to be announced.
