Roman Reigns caused a big hullabaloo with comments that appeared to indicate he’ll be paring back his performances with WWE. Despite subsequent reports speculating that the promotion’s unified champion could be absent all summer, that does not appear to be the case.
A source told The Post that fans can expect Reigns to appear at WWE events this summer.
This past weekend, at an untelevised house show in Trenton, Reigns teased that wrestling could be giving way to broader opportunities — as it once did with his nominal cousin, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson — and that he wasn’t sure if or when he’d be back.
“I’ve been here a couple of times in the past 10 years,” Reigns said. “I’m starting to work into a new phase in my career, and I honestly don’t know if I’ll be back here again. If that’s the case, I just wanna say thank you for all these years of support.”
This all led to natural speculation about what it could mean for Reigns. Will he stop appearing on most house shows? That felt like an inevitability before this promo.
However, a report took it a step further on Tuesday.
Wrestling Observer founder Dave Meltzer, who has been reporting on the industry since the 1980s, said on his digital radio show that Reigns would not be appearing on WWE TV between June 19 and after Labor Day in September.
“I don’t know what the situation is, other than he’s scheduled for the two pay-per-view shows [Money in the Bank and SummerSlam],” Meltzer said. “I don’t know if he’s doing a movie. I don’t know what it is. Obviously, we already know that his schedule going forward is going to be cut way back anyway, but there’s a period where he’s not even going to be on television, because he’s been removed from all the advertising.”
Meltzer later clarified this segment in a tweet.
“WWE pulled him from advertising for TV’s and house shows,” he wrote. “That is what I reported. He was pulled from advertising on events. Whether he appears or not was not my story, my story was factual. He was pulled from advertising for all TV’s.”
Reigns is indeed not advertised on WWE’s website for Smackdown shows leading into Money in the Bank and SummerSlam, but it sounds like the company will nonetheless maneuver ways to include him in the builds for those shows.
