This isn’t the kind of press conference danger that was worrying Naomi Osaka.
Petra Kvitova, the No. 11 seed, withdrew from the French Open on Tuesday after hurting her ankle during her “post-match press requirements” on Sunday. Kvitova defeated qualifier Greet Minnen after swatting off match points in the second set.
The freak injury comes after Osaka withdrew from the event after opting to boycott press conferences during the French Open, citing her battle with depression.
“It is with great disappointment that I announce my withdrawal from Roland Garros,” the 31-year-old Kvitova wrote on Twitter on Tuesday, accompanied by a sad face emoji.
“During my post-match press requirements on Sunday I fell and hurt my ankle. Unfortunately after an MRI and much discussion with my team, I have made the tough decision that it would be unwise to play on it. It’s incredibly bad luck, but I will stay strong and do my best to recover in time for the grasscourt season.”
Kvitova is a two-time Wimbledon champ who suffered a serious hand injury during an attack at her Czech Republic home in 2016.
