Cage said, “Here we go! See, you’re the one that brings these things up, and they go out and eclipse everything else. No, there is no National Treasure 3. If you want to find treasure, don’t look at Disney, okay? It’s not there.”

In the National Treasure franchise, Cage played Benjamin Franklin “Ben” Gates, a treasure hunter, historian, and cryptologist. The first film, directed by Jon Turteltaub, was released in 2004 and grossed $347 million worldwide. Its sequel, ‘National Treasure: Book of Secrets,’ also directed by Turteltaub, came out in 2007 and earned over $459 million worldwide.

The first film’s plot follows: “Historian and code-breaker Ben Gates (Cage) has been searching his whole life for a rumored treasure dating back to the creation of the United States. Joining an expedition led by fellow treasure hunter Ian Howe (Sean Bean), Gates finds an ice-locked Colonial ship in the Arctic Circle that contains a clue linking the treasure to the Declaration of Independence. But when Howe betrays him, Gates has to race to get to the document ahead of his so-called colleague.”

The sequel’s plot follows: “Ben Gates and his father Patrick are surprised by Mitch Wilkinson’s claims that their ancestor was a conspirator in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln based on the missing page of Booth’s diary that he possesses. Outraged, together with his wife, Abigail, and his best friend, the writer Riley Poole, they head to France, England, and Washington to collect clues to prove his honor.”

Recently, Disney created a television series as a continuation of the National Treasure film series. The first season premiered in 2022 but was not renewed for a second season.
