Stunlock Studio’s V Rising finally saw its Version 1.0 release on May 8, 2024, after a two-year early access period. Reviews for it so far have been great, which isn’t surprising at all since the early access phase in itself had a pretty polished feel to it. Right now, V Rising is only available for PC, with its PS5 port scheduled to be released later on. And since it’s available for PC, many have installed the game on their PC handhelds too, such as the Steam Deck. Unfortunately, some players have complained about a crashing issue that’s currently plaguing V Rising on the Deck. If you too are encountering the same, consider reading to learn how you can fix it.
Version 1.0 of V Rising was released with a ton of improvements and features, including controller support (although partial). What it didn’t include was official Steam Deck support, which many players were hoping for. However, the game is still playable on the Deck with a few tweaks. As for this crashing issue, it can be due to a myriad of reasons, ranging from missing files to the Deck OS not running on the latest version. Whatever the cause may be, this guide will help you fix this issue. So, let’s go ahead and take a look at all the available workarounds for this.
V Rising crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it
Since V Rising isn’t officially supported for the Steam Deck, players will have to make do with the following workarounds. Try these and let’s hope at least one of them will be able to resolve your issue.
Use CryoUtilities –
Tools like CryoUtilities can help you get some more performance out of your Steam Deck, which can also be of big help in avoiding crashes. Use Proton –
While you can certainly run the game without Proton, we recommend that you use it in order to get rid of this crashing issue. Take a look at the following steps, if you don’t know how to force use Proton to run a game on the Deck:
- Select V Rising from your Library and press the Options button.
- Now, scroll down and select Properties.
- In the Properties settings, switch to the Compatibility section. There you will find the Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool checkbox, along with a drop-down menu below it.
- Checkmark the checkbox and then select Proton Experimental from the drop-down menu. In case Experimental doesn’t work, you can try other Proton versions, like the latest one, Proton 9.
Install the game on the Deck’s internal memory –
If you happen to be one of the players who has V Rising installed on a microSD card, we recommend that you uninstall the game from there and reinstall it on the Deck’s SSD. However, if you already have V Rising installed on the internal memory and are still encountering crashes, then try another fix.
Repair the game files –
A missing or corrupted game file can also cause issues like this one. In such cases, the only fix is to simply repair those files. To do so, first, open the Properties settings of V Rising and switch to the Installed Files tab. Next, select Verify integrity of game files. Once the process is over, restart the Deck and then launch the game.
Change server –
You can also try changing servers in the game and see if that helps in bypassing this crashing issue. If switching to another server doesn’t make the game crash, then the issue is most likely tied to that server and its settings.
Update –
Make sure that your Deck is running on the latest version available. You can also try switching to the Beta channel and see if that helps you get rid of this issue.
