Back in 2023, speaking to Vogue, Powell stated that the new ‘Twisters’ film would not be related to the 1996 film ‘Twisters.’ He confirmed that it would be a completely original story.

Powell said “We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern-day.”

What is the ‘Twisters’ About?

In Twisters, Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better. As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler, and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Chung says he is putting his own spin on the beloved classic. Chung said, “To me, it felt like an adventure movie, and I always loved how that movie inspired a generation of meteorologists and people who were interested in science and weather just because it made that study feel like it was an adventure. That’s something that I wanted to retain with this one.”

Produced by Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, the film is a joint venture of Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, Amblin Entertainment, and The Kennedy/Marshall Company.

What is the Release Date for ‘Twisters’?

‘Twisters’ is set to hit theaters on July 19, 2024, with distribution by Universal Pictures domestically and Warner Bros. Pictures internationally.
