‘Immaculate’ Review: Sydney Sweeney Delivers Her Best Performance

The premiere of ‘Immaculate‘ occurred at South by Southwest on March 12, 2024. We had the opportunity to watch the film, which is being hailed as the first great horror film of 2024, with Sydney Sweeney delivering her career-best performance in the lead role.

Directed by Michael Mohan, ‘Immaculate’ is a special film that combines stunning elegance with a sense of dread. Sweeney’s powerful performance holds the movie together. There’s one scene in particular, a long shot, that you won’t forget. It’s backed by impressive work from different parts of the filmmaking team. It might just become one of the best scenes of 2024.

In the film, Sweeney plays Cecilia, a woman deeply devoted to her faith, who accepts a promising position at a prestigious Italian convent. However, her idyllic introduction to the picturesque Italian countryside is quickly overshadowed by unsettling revelations, indicating that her new residence hides sinister and terrifying secrets.

‘Immaculate’ starts with a nunsploitation premise, but it surprises you with a jaw-dropping ending/reveal. It’s this year’s equivalent of ‘Barbarian.’ The final scene of ‘Immaculate’ is incredibly intense. Mohan has created a religious horror and nunsploitation film that will leave a lasting impact. Well done.

Overall, ‘Immaculate’ exceeded all expectations. Such a smart script, great pacing, and everything from the performances to the tension building of the scenes is so well executed. One of the best Catholic horror/nun-sploitation movies we’ve had in a long time. Revels in a pitch-perfect setting with a supporting cast including Alvaro Morte, Benedetta Porcaroli, Dora Romano, Giorgio Colangeli, and Simona Tabasco. Dark and delectably deranged. The final act rips and solidifies Sweeney as a top-tier final girl.
