Mets confirm Max Scherzer as Opening Day starter

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Max Scherzer’s scheduled Opening Day start for the Mets is now official.

The Post reported last week that Scherzer would be getting the ball on March 30 in Miami to begin the season, but manager Buck Showalter refrained from announcing it as part of an agreement to unveil the Opening Day starters on MLB Network.

Scherzer will face Sandy Alcantara in the opener.

The Post previously reported the Mets are planning to give Justin Verlander the start in the home opener on April 6.

Scherzer’s Opening Day start for the Mets will be his first.

Last season the honor went to Tylor Megill with Jacob deGrom on the injured list and Scherzer needing an extra day to prepare for his first start because of a minor injury late in spring training.
