Hawaii -- A 33-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his 86-year-old neighbor by slitting the victim's throat with an arrow, authorities in Hawaii said.
Cameron Stewart, of Arizona, was charged Friday with second-degree murder in the death of Charles Hacker, of Pahoa, Hawaii, according to a statement from the Hawaii Police Department.
On Wednesday, officers were called to a home in the Hawaiian Shores subdivision in Puna, Hawaii, for a report of an elderly man in a wheelchair, bleeding from his neck.
When officers arrived, they found Hacker unconscious and bleeding profusely from a "laceration-type injury to his neck" while seated in a walker seat in his driveway.
Responding police and rescue personnel attempted life-saving measures before bringing the elderly victim to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
An autopsy was performed Friday morning, and Hacker’s death was ruled a homicide.
While investigating the scene, police received information that led to the arrest of a suspect. Stewart was taken into custody on suspicion of second-degree murder.
Police conducted a search of Stewart’s home after securing a search warrant. It was there where they discovered a recurve bow, various arrows and other archery-related items.
The motive behind the killing and the details surrounding the attack are unclear as of this writing.
Stewart, who remains in police custody, is scheduled to make his initial court appearance in Hilo District Court Tuesday. His bail has been set at $1 million.
If convicted, the 33-year-old could be sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole, Hawaii News Now reported.
Prosecutors, however, are seeking an extended term of life without the possibility of parole because the victim is elderly.
Stewart and his family moved to the island from Arizona in June, authorities said.
In other news, a 55-year-old man was sentenced to three years in prison for attacking his ex-wife for the third time in McHenry County, Illinois, Lake and McHenry County Scanner reported, citing court records.
Daniel G. Paris, of Woodstock, pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of domestic battery, a class 4 felony.
He was accused of beating the woman, whose name was not disclosed, in separate incidents in 2015, 2019 and 2020.
Paris entered the guilty pleas as part of a deal with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office. In exchange, several other domestic battery counts against him were dismissed.
