As the saying goes, new year, new you… right?

We’re one month into 2024, so even if you are one of the 68% of people who likely already ditched their resolutions, the year is young, and there is still plenty of time to hop on those goals you set for yourself just a few weeks ago.

If those goals you set are related to money, you’re not alone.

Fidelity Investment’s 2024 New Year’s Resolutions Study found that more than half of those surveyed (54%) admit to feeling overwhelmed by their personal finances, and nearly a third (31%) say their relationship with money can be best labeled as “stressful.”

Additionally, over one-third of Americans say they’re in worse financial shape than last year, and two-thirds of respondents were considering a financial resolution for 2024.

Sounding familiar? Us too. This is why it’s more prudent than ever to keep up with financial news — a little time invested in learning about money now can pay off in a big way later on.

To better understand why staying updated on changes in the financial space is important, we spoke to the New York Post’s own business reporter, Lydia Moynihan.

“You might not care about money … but it cares about you,” Moynihan told us, adding that everyone has to deal with money no matter if they’re rich or poor. “The more you know about [your personal finances] — whether it’s putting money in your 401K or financing a home — the better equipped you will be to make decisions.”

“Some publications and channels will assume a base level of knowledge that many of us don’t have,” Moynihan continued. “But educating yourself on some of the fundamentals, like the impact of interest rates, will get you up to speed so you can follow along even when you see financial jargon.”

Are you worried you won’t be able to keep up? That’s when a live TV streaming service, like Sling TV, can help.

“Paying attention to interest rates and waiting to buy a property until rates have come down could mean the difference between going on vacation or not,” Moynihan explained, noting that interest rates, in particular, are something that is crucial to understand.

“Even if you don’t live for getting into the nitty gritty of bond yields, being financially literate — knowing how the market works and what its impact is on your financial decisions can completely transform what kind of lifestyle you are able to live.”

Financial reporting also makes a considerable difference in the general public’s understanding. Moynihan remembers a time during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic when more people became interested in buying stock.

“We had the time and the stimulus checks to see for ourselves if we could make money on stocks,” she said. “But there were a lot of conspiracy theories and misinformation that caused some investors to pile into stocks that would only go down. Providing coverage that helped explain some of the complications in real time hopefully saved people some money.”

Explaining how vital understanding finance and the news surrounding it is one thing, but to actually understand is something else entirely. Not sure where to start?

Don’t worry; we’re getting to that part.
