Gerrit Cole getting MRI on elbow in dire Yankees injury concern

CLEARWATER, Fla. — The most indispensable Yankee is suddenly a concern.

Gerrit Cole is headed for an MRI exam on his right elbow after not bouncing back from throwing as well as he usually does in spring training.

“His recovery, before getting to his next start, has been more akin to what he feels during the season, when he’s making 100 pitches,” manager Aaron Boone said Monday from BayCare Ballpark before the Yankees played the Phillies.

“When he’s at 45 [pitches] and building to 55, he usually doesn’t have the recovery issues he’s having.”

Cole, the reigning AL Cy Young winner, was expected to make his second Grapefruit League start Tuesday. He has been a workhorse for the Yankees, as dependable as anyone in baseball since signing before the 2020 season.

Now the Yankees wait for the MRI results on the 33-year-old Cole, who unlike so many of his contemporaries has never had Tommy John surgery.

“I think there’s a level of discomfort,” Boone said. “But I wouldn’t describe it as he’s in pain.”
