Elon Musk's Transgender Daughter Files For Gender Change As Tesla Lays Off LGBTQ+ Leaders

KEY POINTS

  • Musk's daughter also filed a request for a birth certificate bearing her new name
  • The hearing for Vivian's name change will take place Friday
  • Musk recently laid off the heads of Tesla's LGBTQ+ community and diversity initiative

Elon Musk’s transgender daughter has filed for a request to change her name and gender on a new birth certificate as she cut ties with her father for laying off Tesla’s LGBTQ+ leaders.

Xavier Musk, 18, has filed a request to change her name to Vivian Jenna Wilson to “conform to the petitioner’s gender identity.” In addition, she also stated that she is dropping “Musk” from her name, adding that she no longer wishes to be related to her biological father “in any way, shape or form,” according to the April filing in the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles, first reported by TMZ.

The teen also asked for a new birth certificate bearing her new name. The hearing for her request for a name change will take place Friday.

Neither Elon nor Vivian previously commented publicly about their relationship or her transition. However, Vivian’s request resurfaced after Tesla laid off the president of its LGBTQ+ community and a lead involved in the company’s diversity and inclusivity program.

One of the employees was a five-year Tesla veteran who had initially been hired as a recruiter before he was promoted thrice during his tenure. The other employee was a software engineer who oversaw the naming conventions in Tesla’s vehicle UI team. Both employees volunteered to lead Tesla’s LGBTQ+ and diversity initiatives, according to Electrek

Musk made several comments about the transgender community over the past year. In December 2020, the Tesla CEO tweeted that he supports the transgender community, but added: “All these pronouns are an esthetic nightmare.”
