Ed Reed will be manning the sidelines next season.

Bethune-Cookman University, which is located in Daytona Beach, Fla., announced on Tuesday that they have reached an agreement in principle with the Pro Football Hall of Famer to be their next head football coach.

Reed has served as chief of staff on the football team at his alma mater, Miami, since 2020. Bethune-Cookman fired head coach Terry Sims in late November after going 2-9 in consecutive seasons.

Reed, 44, played safety for the Ravens from 2000-12. He split his final season, 2013, between the Texans and Jets. He was a nine-time Pro Bowler, five-time All-Pro, a Super Bowl champion and the winner of the 2004 AP Defensive Player of the Year award.

Bethune-Cookman, which last won the MEAC in 2015, is presumably looking to replicate the success of fellow former star defensive back Deion Sanders. Sanders won big at Jackson State before taking the head coaching job at Colorado this offseason.
