Dak Prescott ready for Cowboys return as Cooper Rush crashes back to earth

The Cowboys quarterback “controversy” that loquacious owner Jerry Jones refused to nip in the bud is officially dead.

The Cooper Rush hype train came to a screeching halt Sunday night in the Cowboys’ loss to the Eagles in Philadelphia, and injured starter Dak Prescott declared his intention to return from a thumb injury next week against the Lions.

“That’s my plan,” Prescott told reporters after Dallas’ 26-17 loss. The Cowboys (4-2) fell to third place in the NFC East behind the Giants (5-1), while the Eagles improved to 6-0.

Rush, 28, had just one career start before taking over in Week 2 after Prescott needed thumb surgery to repair a fracture suffered during a Week 1 loss to the Buccaneers. Rush and the Cowboys proceeded to win four straight games, including handing the Giants their lone loss on Monday night in Week 3 at MetLife Stadium.

But against the Eagles, Rush completed 18 of 38 passes for 181 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions after not committing a turnover in his previous four games. The Cowboys’ own website ran the following headline after the game: “Cooper Rush’s Bubble Bursts In Philadelphia.”

On Sept. 22, four days after the Cowboys’ Week 2 win over the Bengals, Jones said “of course” he’d welcome a quarterback controversy.

“That means we’d have won,” Jones said then. “If he comes in here and plays as well as Prescott played? Rush? Played that well over these next games ahead? I’d walk to New York to get that.”

The 80-year-old Jones can save his strength for whatever “dirt” Commanders owner Dan Snyder allegedly has on him.
