Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen was discharged from a Copenhagen hospital earlier Friday, less than a week after collapsing on the pitch during Denmark’s opening EURO 2020 match.
The Danish FA announced that Eriksen visited the national team and will travel home to rest and spend time with his family.
“Thank you for the massive number of greetings – it has been incredible to see and feel,” Eriksen said in a statement. “The operation went well, and I am doing well under the circumstances.”
While in the hospital, Eriksen underwent a successful procedure that fitted him with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).
On Saturday, Eriksen collapsed due to cardiac arrest in a terrifying scene early in Denmark’s contest with Finland. He received CPR on the pitch and medics were able to restart his heart with a defibrillator before he was carried off on a stretcher and taken to the hospital. According to Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen, Eriksen was “gone” before receiving treatment.
“It was really great to see the guys again after the fantastic game they played (Thursday) night,” Eriksen’s statement continued. “No need to say that I will be cheering on them on Monday against Russia.”
