Nick Allegretti came into the spotlight as he filled in for a Chiefs All-Pro offensive lineman in Super Bowl 2024.
It turns out Allegretti, 27, was hurting, too.
The Kansas City offensive lineman replaced guard Joe Thuney in the lineup on Sunday but ended up tearing the ulnar collateral ligament in one of his elbows during the second quarter, playing through the injury as the Chiefs came back for a 25-22 win over the 49ers, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday.
Per Pelissero, Allegretti suffered a full tear of the UCL.
The injury, generally ubiquitous with hard-throwing MLB pitchers, was also suffered by 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy in the 2022 NFC title game against the Eagles.
A full tear likely means surgery is in Allegretti’s future.
Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes chimed in about the injury and that Allegretti playing through the tear was important for a beleaguered offensive line.

Mahomes was pressured during the win, getting sacked three times, but it kept him on his feet enough for him to throw 333 yards and lead a game-tying drive in the fourth quarter and a game-winner in overtime.
Allegretti started in only one game for the Chiefs during the regular season but took 100 percent of the team’s offensive snaps in the AFC Championship game and the Super Bowl.
